About Me

Welcome! Come sit with me and have some tea!

Allow me to introduce myself. I am a wife, a mom, a soapmaker, a part time secretary, a wanna be writer, an amateur gardener, an animal lover, a crocheter, a cook, a bread maker, a lector, a eucharastic minister and much more. My interests are many and varied and I lead a very busy life.   Even though I am now 51 years old, I am not going to let age stop me from doing the things I want to do.

I have 4 daughters and  I have been married for to Frank for 31 years now. We also have 2 granddaughters now as well as two son in laws. I am homeschooling Emily, my 13 yo, and have homeschooled her from day one. I also homeschooled Kati, who is now 19, from 6th grade on.
We are endeavoring to live a simple Christian and unmaterialistic life in a secular world. We live on a small holding (1/5 of an acre) of land, in a small cottage that is well under 1000 sq. ft. It was built in 1969 and is in need of much work. We raise goats for milk and for soapmaking and chickens for eggs. We are traveling the path of sustainable living, but have far to go. It is a learning process and we certainly have much to learn. Please join me as I share the musings of my daily life, it’s highs and lows, accomplishments and disappointments and all the random thoughts that pass through my brain each and every day.

I am attempting the same thing here in South Central Texas…..

Thanks. Will search the blog further for more information…..

  • Hello
I blinged the title “cottage chicken coop” and your blog popped up. I was really intrigued by what you had written about the ideal coop you wanted to build. It sounded like the one i would like. Unlike you I am new to the chicken rearing scene. My chicks are on order as of yesterday so I am frantically doing my research to find the right coop. I think I may have to have a temp coop and the build the dream one later. I have decided to raise chickens for various reasons. I grew up on a farm. Both parents were not farmers but we canned, made butter, and ice cream etc. from scratch. We basically lived naturally by utilizing all the produce and livestock from the surrounding farms. My father did hunt deer with my uncle, and we had venison in our freezer every winter. Well I have two small children, we live in a suburb, and I feel we need to get back to nature and the economy is not getting any better and i do not want to wake up and there is no food and no way to get any…so we are going to become urban farmers. I am torn, I want a cottage feel to the backyard farm, but I know with my commitments, and a 8yo and 14 mo old i need flexibility with my coop. I was considering breaking the budget and getting an eglu which seems portable, and very very easy to clean. But it seems so sterile and cold. We only get a weeks worth of freezing weather where we live, so I think the chickens could handle it but with the brick walks, and gravel walkways I am planning… I think it may look wierd. I am having a hard time trying to decide where to put everything. I am afraid of making a mistake ie putting the garden next to the only shaded area, and the coop too close to the house. I did not see that you have posted in a couple of years so I am not sure if you will even read this. If you have time I would appreciate hearing from you.
